February 2008: Linux Developers to Meet in Peking
The Linux Foundation is hosting a Linux Developer Symposium in Peking February 19 and 20 2008. The event partner is the China OSS Promotion Union (COPU).
The event is targeted at Chinese developers and local staff of global corporations such as Google, IBM, Novell and Red Hat. This can be seen as a move by Linux Foundation to promote the Linux and Open Source industry in China.
The Symposium will focus on Linux on desktops and servers as well as embedded devices. The list of speakers includes kernel maintainer Andrew Morton, embedded developer Matt Mackall and journalist Jonathan Corbet, who publishes the Linux Weather Forecast for the Foundation. File system maintainer Coy Li from Novell’s development department in Peking is also expected.
China OSS Promotion Union (COPU) includes many major western enterprises with subsidiaries in China along with local Linux distributors such as Red Flag, Turbolinux and Sun Wah. Further members include over 200 Chinese universities and other research institutions.
Government offices in China are legally required to deploy software produced in China, and this can be free software. Peking’s city administration uses 2000 Linux desktops, and Jiangsu Province is planning to install around 140,000 Linux PCs at schools according to a Linux Foundation report.
