Finnix 93.0 Fresh from Debian Testing

Aug 13, 2009

Finnix, a LiveCD Linux distro for system administrators, is available in version 93.0.

Originally thought a maintenance release after the last update in December 2008, Finnix 93.0 nevertheless provides significant enhancements. The distro is based on the Debian Testing branch and thus brings with it the branch's software status as of August 8.

Finnix has a command line interface and is otherwise Spartan in that it has no desktop environment, office programs or sound support. The compressed CD images are no more than 130 MBytes.

The Linux kernel version is 2.6.30, based on the Debian Testing kernel 2.6.30-5. Developers upgraded Memtest85+ to 2.11 and removed EVMS (which is now unmaintained upstream) and FTP (it uses LFTP instead). Further details are in the release notes.

Finnix 93.0 downloads are ISO images for x86 and PowerPC processors. The distro also runs as guest on Xen and User Mode Linux (UML) systems.

  • Debian testing userland, with a 2.6.30 kernel

Finnix's userland comes almost completely from Debian testing, but the kernel is usually from unstable (2.6.30-5 in this case). Hope that clears up the confusion.
  • You mean unstable.

No. Linux-2.6.30-5 isn't still in testing. You can only find it in Debian unstable.
