Apr 16, 2008 12:48pm GMT

If you are hosting an event and want more women to attend, lining up some interesting female speakers is a great way to start. Geekspeakr.com to the rescue. According to the site: "Many organisers of technical conferences, meetups, and dinners want to have more gender-balance in their lineups, but they don't know where to find technical women speakers. Enter geekspeakr.com, a simple... more »

Girly and Geeky

Apr 11, 2008 4:37pm GMT

Mackenzie wrote an interesting observation about how geek women are perceived and how they present themselves. If you are a woman in open source, you've probably had similar experiences to what she and her friend Elfine have in this field. (As for Elfine's EeePC, I think I'd like one in pink, too, and also every other color.) more »

Anita Borg Awards: Call for Nominations

Apr 11, 2008 4:17pm GMT

Here it is, Friday. How did that happen without a single ROSE Blog post? First, IT360 in Toronto, followed by a day catching up on our next magazine issue and then traveling to San Francisco for LugRadio Live. Two different sides of the continent, and two extremely different events. (And let me tell you, LinuxChix are everywhere! At least one stopped by the booth in Toronto.) As I was doi... more »

Don't forget the passport: IT360 and LUGRadio Live

Apr 03, 2008 2:32pm GMT

Monday morning I wave good-bye to the family and hop on a plane for Canada. I'm leaving myself notes around my house to remember the passport (first, I need to find it). Canada just doesn't seem so far away that it should require one, but I digress... If you make it to Toronto for IT360 or San Francisco for LUGRadio Live next week, be sure to drop by the Linux Pro Magazine booth and pick u... more »

HICK Tech

Apr 01, 2008 6:15pm GMT

While I'm on the subject of Emma Jane Hogbin, I should go ahead and mention the conference she organizes: HICK Tech. HICK Tech 2008 is April 30 at the Bayshore in Owen Sound. According to the site: "Following great success in 2007, HICK Tech returns in April 2008 for another year of enlightenment, inspiration, and networking. HICK Tech is a one-day conference in Owen Sound. In 2008... more »

Crafty and Geeky at LUGRadio Live

Apr 01, 2008 5:54pm GMT

I've subscribed to Craft Magazine since the beginning and still have every issue. Today I ran across a familiar name, Emma Jane Hogbin, on the Craftzine.com blog, and now I have a face to go with it. The Craftzine.com blog shows Emma holding up a pair of hand-knit Drupal socks – can she get any cooler? Or geekier? Emma's talk at LUGRadio Live USA is at 4pm on April 12. (I don't normally d... more »

Miss Bimbo meets Amelia Earhart

Mar 28, 2008 3:42pm GMT

It's hard work (really really really hard work) being a modern mom, and some people just don't make our jobs any easier. When I first heard about the Miss Bimbo game, I hoped it was a bad joke. Sadly, it doesn't look like it is. According to Karen McVeigh's article in The Guardian: "The aim of the Miss Bimbo beauty contest game, which was launched in Britain last month, is to... more »
